Newsletter October 2009

Newsletters keep you in touch with news and events at music centre. Please read and keep for a while, so you know what is happening. WELCOME to all new members - please contact me if you have any questions, comments or suggestions. WELCOME BACK to existing members. It's good to see you all again.

  • Please pay fees due for this term as soon as possible.
  • Music centre members should stay on site until collected at the end of your ensemble. Please do not leave the schools between ensembles, for your own protection and safety. This is particularly important now the evenings are darker. We strongly advise that members wait in the boys' school hall to be collected, as there are always responsible adults in this area.
  • THIS TERM'S CONCERT is at Torquay Boys' Grammar School, in the new Centenary Hall (set back between the Music Suite and the main building) on Friday, 27th November at 7.00pm. Further details in the November newsletter.
  • I would like to make newsletters and other information available through email in addition to the current methods of handing out copies at music centre and on the website www.devonmusiccentres.org.uk. Please let me know if you have any comments.
  • There will be no rehearsal on 23rd or 30th October, for half term.
  • The music centre governing body - Friends of Devon Youth Music-South - holds its AGM on Friday 13th November at 4.30pm. We have a good, supportive committee who meet about 5 times a year to discuss issues, seek funding, help at concerts and help me in the running of the Centre. All parents and friends are welcome. We are in need of someone to act as Minutes Secretary at meetings at the moment. Is this a role you could consider?
  • Some of the members of the Concert Strings have been raising money for the charity Buskaid by holding cake sales at the centre. Marina Sholtz tells me they have raised in the region of £30 so far. Buskaid UK www.buskaid.org.za offers high quality string tuition to impoverished youngsters at its Music School in Soweto. I think it's a very good cause - some of you may remember the Soweto Strings at the proms in 2007, and the documentary on BBC4 television of the same name following two years in the life of the Buskaid Music School.

Happy music-making!
