Brass Ensemble
|

The Brass Ensemble is suitable for more experienced brass players. A wide variety of music is played, with plenty of opportunity
to play with the whole range of brass instruments. There are opportunities for workshops for trombone and trumpet.

Clarinet Choir
|
|
|
The Clarinet Choir consists of about 15 young musicians playing all sizes of clarinets from E flat to contra-bass.
The more unusual instruments are provided by the Music Centre (one of the contra-bass is called "Winston", another is "the U-bend").
The repertoire is a wide range of classical, jazz and light music, much of it arranged for clarinet choir by Marina.
The Clarinet Choir plays in Music Centre concerts and often gives other performances at other concerts and events.

suitable for more experienced players of grades 5 to 8. Previous experience with the larger instruments
is not necessary.

Marina Kummer. Marina has taught clarinet, flute and other wind instruments in Devon for many years.
She is a graduate of Dartington College of Arts, where she studied with David Rix and Roger Fallows.
She is music librarian at the Dartington International Summer School.

The Concert Brass ensemble is suitable for beginners and less experienced brass players. A wide variety of music is played with parts for all brass instruments.

Concert Strings
|
|
|
Concert Strings is a string orchestra for younger players with some experience. Music is arranged to suit individual standards. This orchestra provides a good introduction to playing in a group. The emphasis is on developing technique and expanding repertoire to increase confidence in developing players.

suitable for moderately experienced players of grades 3 to 5.

| Directed by: |
Helen Wills. Helen teaches cello and piano, and uses the Suzuki method combined with traditional teaching. Some of her pupils have become professional musicians in their own right. She is a talented arranger.

Concert Wind
|

|
The Concert Wind Band provides an excellent start for less experienced wind and brass players.
The music is varied with lots of popular pieces that you will know, such as the Lion King and Les Miserables.

beginners and less experienced players, grades 1 to 4.

Double reeds are oboes, cor anglais and bassoons. This ensemble gives players of these instruments
a rare opportunity to meet others who play the same instruments, and share technique and a fascinating
ensemble repertoire.

suitable for players of all abilities, grades 1 to 8.

Rhiannon Morgan, a leading double reed expert in Devon and Torbay.

The Flute Choir gives flautists the opportunity to play rare and valuable bass and alto flutes, and
encourages the playing of the piccolo. Flute choirs have some beautiful music written and arranged for them.

Amanda Ayling, who is a flute teacher in South Devon, and is a graduate of Dartington College.

Flutes are very popular with young players and this group provides an opportunity for beginners and slightly more experienced players to make music together.

Percussion Ensemble
|
|
|
The Percussion Ensemble has access to a wide range of tuned and untuned percussion belonging
to the music centre. They play as an ensemble and join in with the other bands and orchestras to learn
the craft of the percussionist. Previous members of the ensemble are now professional percussionists,
teachers and examiners.

All orchestral percussion instruments including bass drum, side drum, cymbals, drum kit,
tuned percussion (xylophone, glockenspiel, etc.) and timpani (kettle drums) |
| Grades: |
1 to 8. This group is suitable for players of all standards.

| Directed by: |
Colin Bellworthy. Colin has an enormous reputation as a performer and teacher both in the South West
and nationally. We are very lucky to have a musician of his standing here in Torbay and South Devon.

The Saxophone Ensemble is for experienced players of the saxophone family of instruments, from soprano to bass. The music is varied, from classical through swing to rock. It is arranged or specially written to suit the distinctive sound of these exciting instruments.

The Swing Band gives young players a chance to explore the traditional jazz and swing band repertoire,
and a chance for saxophonists, trombonists and trumpeters in particular to play solos and try improvisation.

for more experienced players, grades 5 to 8.

| Directed by: |
Christopher Sears, who plays the trumpet as well as being the Head of Music at Torquay Boys' Grammar
School, and a first class organist and pianist. He is a graduate of Oxford University.

The Youth Orchestra combines all sections of the orchestra to play orchestral music. The orchestra has played
music by Handel, Sousa, William Walton, Verdi, Malcolm Arnold and Vaughan Williams in original versions where
possible.

Alicia Stolliday, who teaches the 'cello in South and North Devon. She runs both North and South music
centres, and has lots of experience of working with youth orchestras.

Youth Strings

This group plays the repertoire of the string orchestra - Vivaldi, Corelli, J.S.Bach, Mozart, Pachelbel,
Peter Warlock - and extends the range by joining with the North Devon Strings.
